I had gone through your question and understand your concerns ..
    In my opinion resting will help your back to heel but you need to avoid heavy lifting , over weighing , vigorous movements , bad sleeping and sitting postures and follow your doctors orders to prevent further complications and even more time to loose your pain .  
Physiotherapy with a chiropractor , hot massages , spinal straightening exercises , painkillers like 
advil when needed , topical anti-inflammatory gels , muscle relaxants , B12 vitamin supplements will be effective for most of cases .
